Мы узнали о смерти еще одного дорогого члена нашего сообщества – ветерана Второй мировой войны Стэнли Балларда (1923-2021), который дважды посетил нас в Кембридже. В 2015 году Стэн принял участие в «Вечере памяти», на котором поделился своими воспоминаниями о войне, а в 2017 году он дал интервью местным студентам в рамках кинопроекта «Арктические конвои».
21 июня Стэну исполнилось 98 лет; он скончался в доме престарелых в графстве Саррей в понедельник, 28 июня.
Стэн родился в Пимлико, районе Лондона — Вестминстере. 21 июня 1941 года он записался на службу в Британский Королевский флот и стал ведущим моряком службы обнаружения подводных лодок (ASDICS) на борту HMS Southdown Destroyer в 1941 году, а затем на борту HMS Cotton в 1943 году – оба корабля участвовали в Арктических конвоях. Он был в составе конвоя в Исландию, а затем в Россию в 1945 году.
Стэн был человеком большого ума и артистического таланта. Будучи ведущим вокалистом на всех собраниях ветеранов, он исполнял одну из своих любимых песен, «The Way We Were». Он также любил поэзию и писал стихи. Пару стихотворений можно прочесть здесь (на английском языке):

There are people in this world today who know not what love is
They are most unfortunate; they know not what love is
There are many forms of love in this life that we live
Of personal things, but the best by far is love for one another
If you have not known this love than life is not complete
What tells us what makes this love we keep within our heart
This love, warm and so full of life, it makes us ten feet tall.
If you have not this love life is incomplete
This life of ours is so short, every precious day we should count
I have seen so many things in this long life I cannot believe
With your background of love instilled in you son, by a family so full of love
And you and I must say “Thank God” for another day…

Our Heaven
Should I find a heaven that I could choose
