Vladimir Il’ich Ulyanov (Lenin) was born in Simbirsk, Russia. He became the leader of the Soviet government of Russia until his death in 1924. On the 150th anniversary of his birth (22 April 1870) we consider the strategy which led to the overthrow of the Provisional Government in October 1917. Consequently, his approach to revolution has been adopted by many communist parties after his death and has led to success in many countries, notably China, but failed in the West. David Lane will consider his theoretical and practical strategy, its criticisms and its relevance to current conditions.

David Lane is an Emeritus Fellow of Emmanuel College, Cambridge University, UK, and previously was Professor of Sociology at the University of Birmingham. He is a Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences.
